Why did you choose to live in CFISD? My parents moved here in the mid-70s. My mom and dad were looking for several things, one of those being a good school district to educate their three kids. I do not know what my teachers would say, but I know my sisters and I received a balanced and rounded education. We participated in academic as well as extracurricular activities. My wife also grew up in this area. When we decided to get married, we never felt the need to look to other suburbs or districts. We both desired to raise a family in this area.
Why did you elect to run for trustee? The way I have been brought up is that you do not stand around and watch-- you get in and help. I have been very blessed as a result of growing up in CFISD and being educated in CFISD. Over the past years I have been able to volunteer at several levels in the district. I have served in the elementary classrooms, field days and spring carnivals. I have served on CPOCs and career days for middle schools. I have been able to serve on district-level committees such as the Bond Steering Committee and the Superintendent’s Drug Task Force, and currently am on the School Finance Study Committee. It is because of these factors that I feel I must take my service to the next level, and that is to be a trustee for CFISD.
Considering your skills and talents, what positive contribution would you make as a member of the Board of Trustees? I am willing to serve and put our children at the forefront of my mind when helping make decisions or providing input into discussions. I truly feel I received a quality education from CFISD. I want every child to have that same opportunity. If a decision has to be made, I will help make it. If more time and data is needed, I will wait to make sure we can make the best decisions with the most data available.
In your opinion, what are the responsibilities of the Board of Trustees? Help define a vision for CFISD, for the immediate and the future. Make sure our superintendent has the adequate resources to make this vision happen.
What improvements do you believe are necessary in the district and how does the Board bring about this change? If you had asked me this several years ago before I had the opportunity to volunteer at the various levels, I probably would have rattled off a couple of things that I questioned the viability or functionality of. I now see that, as a whole, all the departments, from teachers and administration, curriculum development, food service, communications, technology, maintenance, transportation and the many others, all desire to be there for and serve our children. Many of the questions I had, I now see that our state and federal government bring on. And that is what places the extra challenges and sometimes burdens on our district as a whole.
In your opinion, what critical challenges face the district, and what is necessary to address those issues? Continued and adequate fiscal support from the state, especially for rapid growth districts such as CFISD.
What challenges face the public education system in Texas? All districts being able to receive an adequate funding program to allow it to run a day-to-day education. |
