29 CFISD wrestlers qualify for state tournament

Cypress Woods High School had eight state qualifiers and its boys’ team placed second in the Region III-6A tournament Feb. 17-18 at Katy Tompkins High School.

Feb. 19, 2017—Twenty-nine wrestlers from nine CFISD high schools placed in the top four of their respective weight classes at the Region III-6A Wrestling Championships Feb. 17-18 at Katy Tompkins High School to qualify for the UIL Class 6A Wrestling Championships, scheduled for Feb. 24-25 at the Berry Center.

In the boys’ tournament, Cypress Woods High School placed second overall with 123.5 points behind regional champion Katy (147). Cy-Fair (fifth place, 83 points) and Cypress Lakes (sixth place, 77 points) high schools also placed among the top 10 teams in the region.

CFISD had four boys’ regional champions:

  • Cypress Falls High School sophomore Isaih Calderon defended his regional championship in the 106-pound bracket, defeating Cypress Lakes’ Christopher Thomas via a 6-2 decision;
  • Cypress Woods senior Henry Rossiter also defended his regional title in the 182-pound bracket, pinning Summer Creek’s Nathaniel Schutt in 5:13;
  • Cypress Lakes junior Joaquin Bautista won the regional championship in the 132-pound bracket, defeating Mayde Creek’s Charles Gary 14-4 in the final; and
  • Cypress Woods senior Tucker Rowan, who pinned Clear Springs’ Kyle Kretzer in 1:12 to win the 170-pound bracket.

In the girls’ tournament, Cypress Woods, Cypress Ranch and Langham Creek high schools all placed among the top 10 in sixth, seventh and eighth places, respectively.

CFISD had four girls’ regional champions:

  • Cy-Fair senior Alanis Naranjo won the 110-pound title, defeating Morton Ranch’s Chelsea Sanchez 4-2;
  • Cypress Lakes senior Brittany Martini won the 128-pound title, defeating Morton Ranch’s Sophia Levin 5-0;
  • Cypress Woods senior Julia Goodwin won the 185-pound title, pinning Morton Ranch’s April Penn in 2:35; and
  • Cypress Woods sophomore Erryn Davis won the 215-pound title, defeating Seven Lakes’ Gabi Holloway 7-5.

“The boys and girls stepped it up and performed as best they could to get to the next tournament which is what was preached all week at practice,” said Mike White, Cypress Woods head coach. “I’m very proud that Cy Woods has four regional champions—a school record. Cy Woods is also bringing the most-ever wrestlers to the state tournament with eight qualifiers and alternates. I am also proud of the wrestlers that did not qualify for state as they had an exceptional tournament earning team points for the boys second-place team finish.”

The fifth-place wrestler in each weight class will advance to state as an alternate. The following 29 wrestlers and seven alternates placed in the top five in the region:

  • Jarod Camacho, Cypress Ranch, 195 pounds;
  • Matthew Garcia, Jersey Village, 220 pounds; and
  • Hector Olvera, Cypress Ridge, 285 pounds.
