Dec. 7, 2016—When Truitt Middle School eighth-grade student Gilbert Lara noticed a friend choking on his food during lunch on Nov. 11, he immediately took action. Lara performed abdominal thrusts until the item was dislodged and the friend stopped choking. Lara’s friend visited the nurse’s office before returning to class. “Gilbert's quick actions kept his friend from ending up in a potentially life threatening situation,” said Teresa Baranowski, Truitt principal.
