Lillie Kusak

Sept. 25, 2017—Birkes Elementary School kindergarten student Lillie Kusak rang the cancer battle bell at Texas Children’s Hospital on her fifth birthday, ending a fight in which she had a Wilms tumor and her kidney removed in July and endured six rounds of radiation and seven months of chemotherapy. As of Aug. 17, Kusak was still cancer free.

Accomplishments: Kusak took a monumental step in her fight against cancer in July, ringing the cancer battle bell at Texas Children’s Hospital on her fifth birthday. She had a Wilms tumor and her kidney removed in July, and has endured six months of radiation and seven months of chemotherapy. As of Aug. 17, Kusak was still cancer free.

Favorite class: “I love when my teacher, Ms. (Martha) Murphy, reads out loud because she has a beautiful voice.”

Favorite things to do after class: I like to go get Chick-fil-A and McDonald’s.

Favorite song: Shake It Off by Taylor Swift

Favorite website: Starfall. “I like to go to Starfall because I love to play ‘Math Journey.’”

Favorite TV show: Sophia Mermaid. “I love everything about mermaids.”

Favorite movie: Bad Dog Marley. “It’s so silly! There is a part where they take him to the dog home. They rolled down the window and they were holding on to him and he was walking on two paws out the window. It’s my favorite part.”

Ambition: “I want to be a nurse or a doctor when I grow up because I want to fix people. My favorite doctor was Ms. Nicole. She was always there.”

What topics/things are you passionate about?: “I like blowing bubbles with my brother Sam. I like to twirl around and make them go in a circle. Then I like to run after them to make them pop! I also love spending time with my mommy.”

What inspires you? “My mom and my dad help me feel happy and loved. They teach me to be kind.”

What three things can’t you live without?: “Hearts, flowers and rainbows.”

What are you most looking forward to this semester?: “Disney World! I am going to Disney in October for my Make-a-Wish trip. I can’t wait to see Elsa and all the princesses. I am looking forward to the little mermaid ride and want to dress up like the little mermaid to meet Ariel.”
