Dec. 7, 2016—Members of the Faith Assembly Church leadership team surprised Holbrook Elementary School students on Dec. 7 with the announcement that the church will donate a pair of shoes to every student at the school this holiday season.

Partnering with Under Armour and other Houston-area small businesses and individual community partners, Faith Assembly will give away nearly 1,000 pairs of shoes following its two services on Dec. 11.

The church’s schoolwide effort is a transition from the past three years, when it gave bicycles to 955 students at Reed Elementary School, 811 students at Frazier Elementary School and 896 students at Bane Elementary School.

“They came to meet with me one day and said they wanted to help us,” said Yvette Garcia, Holbrook principal. “I told them that, before I retired, one of my goals was for every student in my school to have a brand-new pair of shoes. Some of our kids haven’t had new shoes in years, and some come to school with duct tape holding them together. This is a bucket list item for me.”

Faith Assembly’s announcement, known to church members as “The Gift,” came during Holbrook’s lunch periods on Dec. 7. Leadership team members played music and brought out hula hoops and beach balls to set the stage.

“We believe providing children with ‘The Gift’ is a key to unlocking more hope and joy during Christmas,” said Jason Taylor, Faith Assembly lead pastor. “It’s an investment that extends beyond the holiday. By receiving the shoes through their school, it becomes a launching point for them to gain more excitement about education. It’s more than ‘the gift’ of a pair of shoes—it’s a gift of grace.”

Garcia expressed her gratitude to Faith Assembly and Under Armour for the incredible gift.

“It’s outstanding,” she said. “To want to take care of every student in this school is amazing.”
