Six schools emerge from District One-Act Play zones

March 13, 2017—Six schools’ productions advanced from the UIL District 17-6A One-Act Play zone competitions on March 9-10 to the final district competition, scheduled for March 21 at 3 p.m. at the Berry Center (8877 Barker Cypress Road).

The following schools advanced from Zone I:

  • Cypress CreekLiving Out by Lisa Loomer;
  • Cypress LakesThe Bald Soprano by Eugene Ionesco; and
  • Cypress RanchPeter and the Starcatcher by Rick Elice.

The following schools advanced from Zone II:

  • Cypress FallsThe Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui by Bertolt Brecht;
  • Cypress WoodsRhinoceros by Eugene Ionesco; and
  • Langham CreekThe Secret in the Wings by Mary Zimmerman.

In Zone I, Cypress Creek student Alex Kerry was named Best Actor for the role of Bobby Hernandez and Cypress Ranch student Emily Deragon was named Best Acress for the roll of Molly Aster.

The following students were named to the Zone I All-Star Cast:

  • Laura Del Angel, Cypress Creek – Ana Hernandez;
  • Zuymar Bolivar, Cypress Creek – Zoila Tezo;
  • Karla Brieno, Cypress Lakes – Mrs. Martin;
  • Kellie Laflin, Cy-Fair – Guldenstern;
  • Brendan Morrow, Cypress Ranch – Boy/Peter;
  • Mario Amaro, Cypress Ranch – The Black Stache;
  • The Tragedians, Cy-Fair; and
  • Farshid Keshmirian, Cypress Lakes – Mr. Martin.

The following students were named to the Zone I Honorable Mention All-Star Cast:

  • Thomas Quintanilla, Cypress Ridge – Greg;
  • Autumn Shelton, Cypress Creek – Nancy Robin;
  • Jacqueline Leon, Cypress Lakes – Mrs. Smith;
  • Alyssa Andrichik, Cy-Fair – Rosencrantz;
  • Liam McGarity, Cypress Ranch – Lord Leonard Aster;
  • Jonah Garrett, Cy-Fair – Alfred;
  • Michael Talavera, Cypress Lakes – Mr. Smith; and
  • Ashley Guerrero, Cypress Ridge – Sylvia.

The following students earned Best Technician honors in Zone I:

  • Matthew Potter, Cypress Ridge;
  • Allison McLain; Cypress Creek;
  • Dani Gray, Cypress Lakes;
  • Alec Rodenbaugh, Cy-Fair; and
  • Reilly Jerding, Cypress Ranch. 

Cypress Ridge students Matthew Potter, Zaid Al Qadi, Carson Zoch, Ashlynn Smith and Samantha Falcon were named Best Technical  Crew. 

In Zone II, Cypress Woods student Destin Moreno was named Best Actor for the role of Berenger and Cypress Falls student Lauren Young was named Best Actress for the roll of Arturo Ui.

The following students were named to the Zone II All-Star Cast:

  • Joshua McMahan, Jersey Village – Argon;
  • Victor Flores, Cypress Woods – Jean;
  • Robby Rutzen, Cypress Springs – Charlie;
  • Riley Griffin, Langham Creek – numerous roles;
  • Nico Castillo, Cypress Falls – Givola;
  • Crayten Clendion, Cypress Woods – Mrs. Boeuf;
  • Julio Gonzalez, Jersey Village – Thomas Diaforius; and
  • Nathan Bataz, Cypress Falls – Giri.

The following students were named to the Zone II Honorable Mention All-Star Cast:

  • Rachel Burris, Jersey Village – Toinette;
  • Sara Caster, Cypress Woods – Daisy;
  • Carly Arguelles, Cypress Springs – Elsie;
  • Nicole Rojas, Langham Creek – Nicole;
  • Stone Besch, Cypress Woods – Mr. Papillion;
  • Katie Humphreys, Langham Creek – Daughter;
  • Makena Cook, Langham Creek – Princess Who Wouldn’t Laugh; and
  • Samuel Hackett, Cypress Woods – Dudaro.

The following students earned Best Technician honors in Zone II:

  • Jacqueline Amador, Jersey Village;
  • Robbie Littlefield, Cypress Woods;
  • Courtney Davis, Cypress Springs;
  • Nicole Colonel, Langham Creek; and
  • Sarah Avery, Cypress Falls.

Cypress Falls students Sarah Avery, Felipe Cardoza, Andrew Reynolds, Laura Mitchell and Adalia Mohning were named Best Technical Crew.

The District 17-6A One-Act Play finals will start at 3 p.m. on March 21 at the Berry Center. Tickets are $10 apiece and must be purchased at the door. Plays will begin at the top of each hour in the following order:

  • Cypress Woods;
  • Langham Creek;
  • Cypress Falls;
  • Cypress Lakes;
  • Cypress Ranch; and
  • Cypress Creek.
