The Food Service Department is one of the largest support services departments in the District with over 1,200 employees. Our staff prepares and serves over 113,000 breakfasts and lunches daily, a total of about 20 million meals per year, at all 86 of our campuses.
In addition to our 86 campuses, our department operates a 50,000 square foot central production facility where food is sent out to the schools to prepare meals each day. Our production center prepares menu items such as chili, spaghetti sauce and taco meat from scratch, and bakes fresh whole grain rolls, cinnamon rolls and kolaches.
The Food Service Department operates under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program. These programs are administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and by the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) at the state level. All of our food and beverages served meet strict federal guidelines from the USDA and TDA. We have seven Registered Dietitians on staff that help ensure our meals meet these guidelines.
The Food Service Department is self-funded and does not receive funds from local property taxes. We receive federal reimbursement and earn revenue to paying for all of our departmental expenses.
