Nov. 14, 2014—The Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) will host the fifth annual Cypress Hoops Invitational Tournament Dec. 11-13 at CFISD high schools and the Berry Center (8877 Barker Cypress Road).

The three-day, 24-team tournament will be underwritten by North Cypress Medical Center Hospital. In addition to all 10 CFISD schools, the following 14 teams will travel to the invitational:

  • San Antonio Clemens
  • Beaumont Ozen
  • South Grand Prairie
  • Galena Park North Shore
  • Killeen Shoemaker
  • Killeen Harker Heights
  • Humble Summer Creek
  • Aldine Nimitz
  • George Ranch
  • Dallas Kimball
  • Alief Hastings
  • Alief Elsik
  • Texas City
  • Spring

“The word has gotten out about the high level of organization and quality of our tournament,” said Teresa Hull, CFISD associate superintendent and event co-chair. “This will help us continue to build state recognition and gives us great potential to grow.”

New to the tournament this year will be family fun activities including face painting, balloon animals and much more. Northwest Dodge will once again sponsor a chance to win a car during the championship game on Dec. 13.

The tournament was started by community member Eric Burg and modeled after an extremely successful tournament held in Pasadena. Burg, who played basketball in CFISD, wanted a way to showcase the district’s talent and facilities, and the tournament grew from there.

Proceeds from the Cypress Hoops Invitational benefit the CFEF, which raises money for student scholarships and staff development grants. The fourth annual tournament raised $18,750.02 as Galena Park North Shore defeated Plano West High School, 62-58, in overtime to win the championship.

“These games are so fun to watch,” Hull said. “We are hoping to attract many spectators to cheer for the kids since ticket prices are so reasonable. We want a lot seats in the seats!”

Tickets will be sold at the gate for $2 (students) and $3 (adults), with a family fun pass granting access to all games for $8.

Several sponsorship opportunities are available on the CFEF website.

A tournament bracket will be posted on the district website the week of Dec. 1.
