The Texas Council for the Social Studies has named Cypress Falls High School teacher Theresa Douglas as this year's recipient of the Jean Lantz NOVA Award, which is presented annually to an outstanding new teacher in Texas who has contributed to the advancement of social studies education within the school and the community.
She was recognized for this honor by the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District during the March 7 Board of Trustees meeting.
Douglas, who was chosen from a statewide field of social studies educators at the elementary, middle school and high school levels, said she was "shocked" that the Council had selected her for this year's NOVA Award. "It was very exciting and humbling at the same time, because I don't necessarily think that I [teach social studies] better than everyone else in the state of Texas," she said. "Yet, it's an amazing feeling to be recognized."
Now in her third year of teaching at Cypress Falls High School, Douglas earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Sam Houston State University and has been a member of the Texas Council of the Social Studies since she began teaching. She was nominated for this year's NOVA Award by her team leader and received letters of recommendation from parents and students as well.
