CYPRESS FALLS PITCHERS KAZMIR, EVERTS
DRAFTED BY MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL TEAMS

Cypress Falls High School baseball standouts Scott Kazmir and Clint Everts were both selected today as first-round picks in Major League Baseball’s 2002 First-Year Player Draft.

Kazmir, a left-handed pitcher with a 95-mph fastball, was drafted by the New York Mets, which had the 15th first-round selection. His record with the Golden Eagles this season was 11-2. He struck out 172 batters in 75 innings on the mound and finished the year with a 0.310 ERA.

Everts, a right-handed pitcher with a powerful curveball, was selected by the Montreal Expos, which had the fifth pick in the draft. His record this season was 10-3 with a 0.980 ERA. He struck out 157 batters in 81 innings from the mound this season.

This marks only the fourth occasion in Major League Baseball history that athletes from the same high school have been drafted in the first-round, and only the first time that the teammates were from Texas.

Kazmir and Everts both drew much attention from talent scouts for nearly every professional baseball team as well as the MLB’s own scouting bureau. Coached by Brent McDonald, the two pitchers have led the Cypress Falls team to the playoffs in each of the last three seasons.

A press conference with the two athletes and their families has been scheduled for today at 7 p.m. in the Cypress Falls High School auditorium.
