Taking a precautionary approach to
ensure the health and safety of students and staff, the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent
School District has purchased 62 automated external defibrillators that will
be available at each of the district's facilities in the event of a medical
emergency.
Approved by the Board of Trustees in September at a total cost of $154,365,
the portable defibrillators will extend the emergency medical response capabilities
of school nurses and high school athletic trainers, who have been trained to
use the equipment in conjunction with their cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
certification.
Rick Berry, CFISD superintendent of schools, said that the district had been
researching the defibrillators for nearly three years. He said the district's
decision to purchase the defibrillators was made after local emergency medical
service (EMS) personnel had expressed just how invaluable they were in emergency
situations.
"The idea that we might be able to save a life made it an easy decision
to have defibrillators at all of our schools," Berry said. "We really
thought that we should have them before the need ever came about."
Jan Jones, director of CFISD health services, said that the district plans to
provide CPR and defibrillator training for as many district personnel as possible,
with yearly updates after the initial training session.
Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is one of the first and only school districts in the area
to have defibrillators.
