Graduating Cy-Fair High School senior Michael Hamilton was recently awarded a four-year, $8,000 scholarship as this year’s recipient of the Derrick Eakin Memorial Scholarship.
With plans to major in criminal justice at Sam Houston State University this fall, Hamilton has set his sights on becoming a forensic scientist. He has prepared himself for the academic challenges to achieve this goal by maintaining excellent grades in all of his honors-level courses in high school. He has been very active in the Spanish National Honor Society as well as the YMCA Youth and Government Program during his years at Cy-Fair.
Beyond the classroom, Hamilton has been working two jobs after school, on weekends and during summers to assist with the finances at home and to prepare for college expenses. He realizes that hard work is the price to pay to reach the goals he has set.
The son of Stefanie Hamilton of Cypress, Michael has three younger brothers who all currently attend Cy-Fair High School.
The scholarship is presented to deserving and qualified high school graduates each year in memory of Derrick Eakin, a 1990 Cy-Fair High School graduate who attended all of his years in
public education in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District. Eakin was in his second year at the University of Texas at Austin at the time of his death. His parents, Dan and Cindy Eakin, established the scholarship and foundation in their son’s name soon after his death in November 1991.
Scholarships are awarded based on economic need, scholastic performance and community service. Cy-Fair High School seniors may pick up an application in the counseling office at the beginning of the school year and have until Spring Break to complete and return the form.
Since the foundation first awarded the Eakin Memorial Scholarship in 1992, there have been 11 recipients from Cy-Fair High School and four recipients from Cy-Falls High School. Nearly eight Eakin scholarship winners have successfully graduated from college.
