The Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District has been selected to receive two prestigious awards for the design and construction of Margaret Moore Gleason Elementary, which opened with the start of the 1999-2000 school year as one of several new facilities funded by the 1998 bond election.
The district’s architectural firm, PBK Architects, entered its designs and detailed work plans for Gleason Elementary in the 2001 TASB/TASA School Architecture competition during the summer. PBK President Daniel Boggio notified the district in mid-August that the Gleason project had garnered two awards: Architectural Excellence in Design and Architectural Excellence in Value.
"We are so proud to have played a part in the planning and development of this outstanding elementary school project," Boggio said. "All of us at PBK sincerely appreciate the opportunity to work with all of the individuals that make the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District such a successful part of an outstanding community."
The Gleason project will be on display during this year’s TASB/TASA Annual Convention in Dallas and showcased in a traveling display throughout the state in May 2002.
Located near West Road and Beltway 8, Gleason Elementary was built for approximately $7,890,272 to house a capacity of 920 students. The school was named for Margaret Moore Gleason, a well-respected educator who dedicated 33 of her 40 years in public education to Cypress-Fairbanks ISD before retiring in 1998.
Opening to an enrollment of 702 students in August 2000, the school provided relief for Bang, Willbern, Frazier and Francone elementary schools. By February 2001, Gleason’s enrollment had grown to 914 students.
The district’s 35th elementary school, Nancy Marsh Sampson Elementary, is currently under construction using the same designs for Gleason with some minor modifications. Located in the Coles Crossing community, Sampson Elementary is scheduled to open with the start of the 2002-03 school year.
