Hairgrove Elementary school nurse Cindy Leins has earned an Award for Excellence in Texas Health from the Texas Department of Health (TDH) in recognition of a program that she developed and implemented at her campus. In honor of her accomplishment, Hairgrove Elementary will receive a $750 award for a new school health program from the state during a ceremony in July.
Her program, Teach Us Body Sense, or TUBS, was created to incorporate health education into the school curriculum at Hairgrove. TUBS incorporates children’s literature, videos, models and puzzles to teach the young students more about their bodies and how to take care of themselves.
Leins was prompted to develop a more active learning program after she discovered research that indicated that simply providing facts on health does not benefit children in establishing healthy behaviors. Through the use of reading exercises and hands-on activities designed to capture children’s imaginations, Leins created an innovative program that appeals to students with varying learning needs and promotes healthier lifestyles during the children’s formative years.
In a letter to Leins notifying her of the award, Texas Health Commissioner Eduardo J. Sanchez wrote, "Thank you for your on-going commitment to the health of your students, staff and greater community. Your school health program serves as a model of successful health programming for other schools throughout the state."
Additionally, CFISD Superintendent Rick Berry commended Leins during his comments and recognitions at the May 13, 2002, Board of Trustees meeting.
Awards for Excellence, sponsored by the Texas Health Foundation and administered by the Texas Department of Health, provides recognition and financial support to schools and districts striving to improve the long-term health practices of Texas children. The program honors only fifteen schools/districts each year with prize amounts of $750, $1,000 and $1,500.
