CFISD SUPERINTENDENT CHOSEN TO REPRESENT REGION IV ON TASA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
Rick Berry, superintendent of schools for the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District, was elected in November 2001 by Region IV members of the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) to serve as the area’s representative on the organization’s executive committee.
As an officer on the TASA executive committee, Berry will work with 28 other members who represent regional education divisions throughout Texas. The committee meets six times each year to plan and guide the efforts of TASA, which offers support for and input into professional issues and state policies regarding public education.
"During a legislative year, lawmakers in Austin look to organizations like TASA for a lead on what’s happening in education," Berry said. "With all the changes that have taken place this year— including the recent resignation of the Texas Commissioner of Education [Jim Nelson] and the move toward implementing new state assessment exams, there will be a lot of issues on the table for the next Legislature."
The organization also works closely with the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), and provides training and professional development for superintendents and administrators.
As the Region IV officer, Berry represents the largest and busiest educational jurisdiction with more than one-third of the total student-population in the state. His experience as the leading administrator for the largest "Recognized" school district in Texas will also serve him well in his new role.
"I think [educators] look to Region IV for leadership," Berry said. "Over the years, others have seen that this region is at the pulse of education in Texas. And right now, enrollment increases and how it impacts school districts is a major issue. This is something we’re very familiar with in Region IV, and especially Cypress-Fairbanks ISD."
Berry was nominated and elected by his Region IV peers to finish out a term made vacant by retired Alief ISD Superintendent James Smith. After completing this term in May, Berry is eligible to serve two full terms if reelected to the executive committee.
TASA Executive Director Johnny Veselka said that he’s known Berry as an active member of the organization for a number of years. "We look forward to his representation for Region IV and the work he will help us accomplish," Veselka said.
