CFISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES NAMED TEXAS’
‘OUTSTANDING SCHOOL BOARD OF THE YEAR’

The Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District Board of Trustees has been named the state’s 2002 Outstanding School Board of the Year by the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA). The distinction was announced Saturday, September 27 during the first general session of the Texas Association of School Administrators/Texas Association of School Boards (TASA/TASB) 42nd Annual Convention.

Trustees serving on the CFISD Board for 2001-2002 were Lou Bertoli, president; Lida Woodul, vice president; Terry Newcomer, secretary; Alton Frailey; William O’Brien; Al Martinez; and Don Ryan.

Previously named the Region IV Outstanding Board of the Year, the CFISD Board was then selected as one of TASA’s five Texas Honor Boards for 2002. The other Honor Boards in the TASA school board competition were Bronte ISD (Region XV), Llano ISD (Region XIII), Northwest ISD (Region XI), and Quinlan ISD (Region X). The superintendent of each school district nominated his or her respective school board.

A committee interviewed each of the five honor boards during the TASA/TASB convention, which was held last week in Dallas. The CFISD Board was named Texas’ Outstanding School Board during the convention’s general session Saturday morning.

The nomination process required completion of an extensive application, which included documented evidence supporting the fulfillment of the award program criteria. The application itself serves as the basis for selection in TASA’s award program.

The district’s nomination of the CFISD Board of Trustees was submitted to Region IV Educational Service Center in June, and the Board was chosen by Region IV to advance to state-level of the competition. TASA announced CFISD among its five Honor Board selections in August.

Among the factors that resulted in the selection of the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Board for the state honor were the trustees’ vision, commitment and leadership as policy makers; commitment to the improvement of students; evidence of strong community support for the district; cooperation among Board members and the superintendent; and evidence of successful school/business partnerships.

TASA created the School Board Awards Program in 1971 to recognize those school boards that have demonstrated outstanding dedication and rendered ethical service to the children of Texas. This is the first time that a CFISD Board has been chosen as the state’s Outstanding School Board of the Year.
