CFISD INDUCTS 16 INTO 2002 WALL OF FAME

Sixteen honorees of distinction were recognized October 29 and inducted into the 2002 Wall of Fame for their commitment and contributions to the educational excellence in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District.

The CFISD Board of Trustees and eight outstanding CFISD employees were honored for their professional achievements at the state and national level, along with the winner of the "Friend of Education" award, which is presented to a community member who has made major contributions to enhance the educational experiences of CFISD students.

The Board of Trustees was honored for being named the state’s 2002 Outstanding School Board of the Year by the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA). Trustees serving on the CFISD Board for 2001-2002 were Lou Bertoli, president; Lida Woodul, vice president; Terry Newcomer, secretary; Alton Frailey; Dr. William O’Brien; Al Martinez; and Don Ryan.

This year’s "Friend of Education" award was presented to Mike Brezina, who served as chairman of the 2001 bond steering committee, for giving his time, energy and leadership to the committee whose service was instrumental in the passage of the 2001 bond referendum.

Brezina is active in local activities and is known for his efforts in working on behalf of the children of the district.

Nadine Dickson, biology teacher at Jersey Village High School, was the recipient of the Texas Biology Teacher Award from the Texas Association of Biology Teachers. This honor is given annually to one secondary teacher in the state who exemplifies outstanding work in the classroom.

Theresa Douglas of Cypress Falls High School was honored for receiving the Social Studies 2001 Jean Lantz NOVA Award which is presented annually to an outstanding new teacher in Texas. Douglas is the only teacher in the state to earn this honor and was selected for this award for her contributions to the advancement of social studies education within her school and the community.

Dr. Scott Poland, director of psychological services, was named 2001 Psychologist of the Year by the Texas Psychological Association for his outstanding contribution to the psychology profession. This distinction earned Poland his third induction into the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Wall of Fame.

Thomas Schaefer, program manager of career and technology education, served as 2001-2002 president of the Career and Technology Administrators of Texas. His leadership helped to promote and develop the total program of career and technology education and to promote and sponsor programs for the professional growth of its members.

Deanna Swenke, associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction, received the Texas Counseling Association Layperson Exemplary Service Award for 2001-2002 school year. This award was given in recognition of her service in the support and promotion of guidance and counseling in Texas.

Arnold Thomas, athletic trainer at Cy-Fair High School, was one of 11 trainers in the country chosen for the Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award for 2002 by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. This award recognizes outstanding individuals for their dedication and service to the training profession. He was also recently selected to the Southwest Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame. This marks the third time that Thomas has been honored by the district’s Wall of Fame program.

Also making a third appearance on the Wall of Fame, Sadie Woodard, CFISD senior director of guidance and counseling, was recognized for receiving the Texas Counseling Association’s Presidential Award for 2001. This award was given to Woodard for her service and leadership to the association and to the profession of guidance and counseling.

Ann Wurst, teacher and world geography team leader at Cypress Falls High School, was honored as the recipient of the 2002 National Council of Geographic Education Distinguished Teaching Achievement Award. She was nominated by her peers and chosen for this honor for outstanding teaching and for her contribution to geographic education.

Now in its eighth year, the CFISD Wall of Fame program celebrates the accomplishments and successes of a handful of the district’s best. In recognition of their achievements, portraits of the inductees are displayed in the foyer of the Instructional Support Center for one year, and then are moved to the "Hall of Fame" where their images join a growing list of outstanding educators that were honored in previous years.
