District Names Principals for Three Elementary Schools Set to Open With 2003-2004 Academic Year

Three principals who will open new elementary schools in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District with the start of the 2003-2004 school year were announced during the January 21 meeting of the Board of Trustees.

Carla Brosnahan, currently principal of Sheridan Elementary, was chosen to open the district’s 36th elementary campus, Barbara Warren Birkes Elementary School. Brosnahan earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education and Counseling from Houston Baptist University in 1983 and a Master of Education in Administration and Supervision from the University of Houston in 1990. She began her education career in 1983 as a fifth-grade teacher at Lieder elementary, where she was later promoted to an assistant principal in 1987. She transferred to help open Sheridan Elementary in 1992 as an assistant principal and became the school’s principal three years later.

Current Metcalf Elementary Principal Daniel McIlduff was chosen to open Arlene Rydel Robison Elementary School next year. After earning his Bachelor of Science in Elementary and Special Education from Kent State University, McIlduff began his career in 1979 as a third-grade teacher in Houston ISD where taught students with special needs. In 1984, he joined Cypress-Fairbanks ISD as a fourth- and fifth-grade teacher at Millsap Elementary and earned a Master of Education in Art from the University of Houston in 1986. He was promoted to an assistant principal at Post Elementary in 1987, served as the director of instruction at Arnold Middle School from 1990 to 1992, and became principal at Lieder Elementary later that same year.

With 29 years of experience in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, Emmott Elementary Principal Joan "Cathy" Jones was selected to open Jane Maloy Tipps Elementary School. She earned a Bachelor of Science from Texas Southern University in 1972 and completed her Master of Education in Administration in 1989 at Texas Southern University. Jones joined the staff at Matzke Elementary in 1972 after completing her student teaching in CFISD. She transferred to Hancock Elementary in 1973 and was chosen as a team leader and assistant principal six years later. In 1984, she assisted with the opening of Emmott Elementary as an assistant principal and transferred to Lamkin Elementary in 1987. Jones returned to Emmott Elementary in 1990 as principal. She has served in that position for 13 years.

These principals will begin working on opening their respective schools and recruiting teachers and staff in March. All three schools will open in August 2003.

According to CFISD Superintendent Rick Berry, it is the district’s practice to reassign experienced, successful principals to open new schools. "We believe that these principals have proven experience in long-term planning and the day-to-day management of an existing campus and are best suited for the complex processes of preparing a new site for operations, recruiting a new staff and developing a rapport with a new group of students and community," he said.

Replacements for each of these principals’ current positions will be announced at future Board meetings.
