On Friday, Cypress Creek High School experienced an increased number of student absences due to illness. Symptoms appeared to be associated with an intestinal virus; however, Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services was contacted to confirm our assumptions.
The health department conducted a thorough investigation that began Friday, and continued throughout the weekend and this morning. The investigation included interviewing students who were ill and inspecting the food service area and food handling procedures. The district also tested the drinking water. All tests were negative indicating that these illnesses are not associated with the school cafeteria or drinking water.
The district’s latest report from the Harris County health department indicates that the source of the virus came from outside Cypress Creek High School. This virus is consistent with what the general public is experiencing, and there is no cause for alarm.
The county health department anticipated an elevated number of absences this morning in the elementaries and middle schools that feed into Cypress Creek High School. The number of student absences at these feeder schools has increased by a small percentage confirming that this is an intestinal virus.
Based on the recommendation of Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services, parents are encouraged to send their children to school unless they are ill. In addition, children should practice good hygiene habits, which include proper hand washing and not sharing food or drinks with one another. Parents are advised to keep only children who are ill at home.
