CFISD Students Advance to State History Fair

The Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District had 109 students who placed first or second in regional history fair competition February 22 at Bleyl Middle School and will advance to the state competition May 9-10 at the Renaissance Hotel in Austin.

"This contest is a wonderful opportunity that allows our students to grow in confidence and interview subjects and obtain first-hand knowledge of history," said Mary Smith coordinator of secondary social studies for CFISD. "This group of students going to state is a very strong and dedicated group. They have spent several hours of their personal time with Michael J. Bailey, curator of the Brazoria County Historical Museum to fine tune their projects."

Middle school students advancing to the state level are:

• Miles Diaz, Goodson, first place in Papers-Junior Division
• Matt Delgado, Thornton, second place in Papers-Junior Division
• Chris Calles, Thornton, first place in Individual Performances – Junior Division
• Navneet Setlur, Goodson, second place in Individual Performances – Junior Division
• Emily Taylor, Darcy Armstrong, Austen Bailey and Shelby Hellums, Aragon, first place in Group Performers – Junior Division
• Vivian LoDuca and Jennifer Anthes, Thornton, second place in Group Performers – Junior Division
• Alexandra Calvert, Goodson, first place in Individual Documentary – Junior Division

• Kelly Chappius, Goodson, second place in Individual Documentary-Junior Division
• Cameron Hinojosa and John McDaniel, Aragon, first place in Group Documentary-Junior Division
• Siddhanth Dadhich, David Vier and Dhirj Gupta, Goodson, second place in Group Documentary-Junior Division
• Ravanne Harris, Thornton, first place in Individual Exhibit-Junior Division
• Laura Desrochers, Goodson, second place in Individual Exhibit-Junior Division
• Sean Fiorella and Vick Dang, Thornton, first place in Group Exhibit-Junior Division
• Tiffany Van and Courtney Weiser, Goodson, second place in Group Exhibit-Junior Division

Students earning special awards were: Emily Taylor, Thornton Middle School, African-American Willie Lee Gay Award; Stephanie Clark, Cy-Fair High School, Oral History Award and Sara Franco, Tara Grigg and Melanie Aston, Jersey Village High School, Women in Texas Jane McCallum Award.
