CFISD ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL PERSONNEL CHANGES

During its March 6 meeting, the Board of Trustees of the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District approved the superintendent’s recommendation to name Horne Elementary Assistant Principal Meredith Perkins as principal of Frazier Elementary and Gleason Elementary Principal Janet Hoover as assistant superintendent for elementary administration beginning in July 2003. Additionally, trustees recognized Cheryl Salyards, who will be reassigned in July to assume the duties of the assistant to the superintendent.

With 29 years of experience in education, Meredith Perkins has been an employee of Cypress-Fairbanks ISD for the last 15 years. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Baylor University in 1974 and began teaching in Waco ISD as an elementary resource teacher. After nearly a decade with Waco ISD, Perkins moved to Spring Branch ISD and served for four years as an adaptive behavior teacher for secondary students. She transferred to CFISD in 1987 to join the Adaptive Behavior Center staff. She completed her master’s degree at the University of Houston in 1993 and accepted a promotion to her current position as assistant principal for Horne Elementary in 1994.

Perkins will replace current Frazier Elementary Principal Erwann Davis, who was named as principal of Metcalf Elementary in February.

Janet Hoover has earned all 28 years of her education experience in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from The University of Texas in 1974 and began teaching on the grade 4-5 team at Post Elementary. In 1979, Hoover transferred to Holbrook Elementary as the team leader for fourth- and fifth-grades and served in that assignment until 1985 when she was chosen to become the assistant principal for Holmsley Elementary. She made a lateral transfer to Millsap Elementary in 1987 and became the school’s principal two years later. In 2000, Hoover was named to her current position as principal for Gleason Elementary.

In becoming the assistant superintendent for elementary administration, Hoover leaves a vacancy for principal at Gleason to be announced at a future Board meeting. She will replace Jane Little, who will retire at the close of the current contract year.

As the current assistant superintendent for educational support services, Dr. Cheryl Salyards will be reassigned to become the assistant to the superintendent, effective in July. Salyards earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Houston in 1974 and began her education career in Houston ISD teaching middle school students with hearing impairments. After completing her master’s program at UH in 1977, she came to CFISD and taught elementary students with hearing impairments for one year. She then served as the supervisor of the Northwest Harris County Cooperative where she assisted in implementing and facilitating the deaf education program for seven Houston-area school districts. Salyards returned to Cypress-Fairbanks ISD in 1986 to become the district’s special education coordinator and was promoted to director of special education two years later. In 1996, she was promoted to senior director for special education and completed her doctorate at UH in 1998. She was promoted to her current position as assistant superintendent for educational support services that same year.
