Cypress Springs High School senior Kathleen Johnson has been named one of approximately 500 semifinalists in the 2003 Presidential Scholars Program. Semifinalists were selected from more than 2,600 candidates on the basis of superior achievements, leadership qualities, personal character and involvement in community and school activities.
Final selection of the Presidential Scholars will be made by the Commission on Presidential Scholars, which is appointed by the President, and will be announced in May. The Commission will select one female and one male from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. students living abroad, as well as up to 20 students from the creative and performing arts and 15 students at-large.
Johnson is a National Merit Finalist and Scholarship Recipient and a member of the National Honor Society. She is ranked fourth in a class of 623 students. Johnson is involved in extracurricular activities including band, competitive swimming, Girl Scouts, elementary student tutoring and church choir.
She plans to attend Notre Dame University in the fall.
