Kirk Elementary Students Collecting Phone Cards For U.S. Troops

Kirk Elementary students have turned a kindergarten plan to support the United States Military Personnel in the Middle East into a campus-wide project that has collected calling cards totaling more than 100,000 minutes in just three short days.

The project began when kindergarten teachers Amy Price and Karen Webb wanted to do something to support the troops involved in Operation Iraqi Freedom and discussed it with their kindergarten students. Students came up with the idea to collect cards to help those in the armed forces stay in touch with family. When word of their intentions spread throughout the campus, the project soon became a school-wide effort.

Teachers and staff members began collecting calling cards Tuesday, April 1 and by the end of school Thursday, April 3, students had donated calling cards worth more than 100,000 minutes. The school will continue to accept donated calling cards through Friday, April 11 and will present them to the Red Cross for distribution overseas. Those wishing to donate calling cards should ensure that they have at least 60 minutes of time on them and can be used internationally.

"The response by the students has been tremendous," said Penny Allen, instructional specialist at Kirk. "The teachers never expected the response this has generated. To collect this incredible amount of minutes in such a short time is amazing."
