Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Trustees honored members of the Cypress Falls High School
Science Bowl team during the April 14 board meeting. Students Mitch Bellis,
Charles Liebling, Peter Vu and Po Wang were honored for placing second at the
U.S. Department of Energy Regional Science Bowl at Texas A&M University
of February 22. They are coached by Jennifer Wuellner.
The Department of Energy developed the National Science Bowl in 1991 to encourage high school students from across the nation to excel in math and science and to pursue careers in those fields. It provides the students, and teachers who have prepared them, a forum to receive national recognition for their talent and hard work.
This year, more than 12,000 students
from more than 1,800 high schools will participate in more than 64 regional
tournaments nationwide. These competitions are coordinated and run by Energy
Department sites, other Federal agencies or educational institutions. The winning
team from each regional competition receives a trip to Washington, D.C. (all
expenses paid) for the National finals May 1 - 5, 2003. Since its inception,
more than 80,000 high school students have participated in regional tournaments
leading up to the National finals.
