EAKIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED TO CY-FAIR HIGH SENIOR
Graduating Cy-Fair High School senior Krista Anderson was recently awarded a four-year, $8,000 scholarship as this year’s recipient of the Derrick Eakin Memorial Scholarship.
Anderson plans to major in international business at the University of Texas this fall. Anderson has taken all honors classes, maintained excellent grades in Advanced Math and Physics, and has been active in the National Honor Society, Student Council, Senior Women’s Club, Spanish Club, Higher Dimensions, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Amnesty International. She served as an ambassador in the Model United Nations program. She has also been active in her church and served as a volunteer at the Mariner Nursing Home, Star of Hope Mission and Special Olympics.
The daughter of Michael and Janice Anderson of Cypress, Krista has four sisters – two of whom will be still be attending Cypress-Fairbanks schools.
The scholarship is presented to deserving and qualified high school graduates each year in memory of Derrick Eakin, a 1990 Cy-Fair High School graduate who attended all of his years in public education in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District. Eakin was in his second year at the University of Texas at Austin at the time of his death.
His parents, Dan and Cindy Eakin, established the scholarship and foundation in their son’s name soon after his death in November 1991.
Scholarships are awarded based on economic need, scholastic performance and community service. Cy-Fair High School seniors may pick up an application in the counseling office at the beginning of the school year and have until Spring Break to complete and return the form.
Since the foundation first awarded the Eakin Memorial Scholarship in 1992, there have been 12 recipients from Cy-Fair High School and four recipients from Cy-Falls High School.
