Cypress-Fairbanks ISD trustees honored Labay Middle School student Vicky Ren during the May 8 Board meeting. Ren, an eighth-grade student, won first place for level 2 (seventh- and eighth-graders) in the Texas Letters About Literature Contest.
Her letter to Shel Silverstein, author of The Giving Tree, was chosen by a panel of judges comprised of librarians, teachers, college professors and newspaper editors from more than 2,500 applicants in the contest. Her letter has been forwarded to the Library of Congress where it will be considered with other state winners for the national prize.
She received $100 for winning the state contest and was invited to read her letter to the Texas Association of School Librarians meeting at the Texas Library Association Conference at the George R. Brown Convention Center April 2.
