Current and former trustees joined principals, administrators, teachers and employees of Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District in honoring retiring Superintendent Rick Berry during a reception in his honor January 5 at Cypress Ridge High School. Berry is retiring this June after spending the last 12 years as the leading administrator of CFISD. He will be on an extended leave during the second semester.
Superintendent Designee Pam Wells served as the master of ceremonies for the event and presented Berry with gifts from district employees, including a custom-made diamond ring encrusted with the district seal, an exquisite vase for his wife and a scrapbook filled with farewell messages from employees.
Guests were invited to share stories with Berry and his wife, Sue, and view photographs as well as video and slide presentations covering Berry’s tenure. Orchestra students from Cy-Fair High School, Cypress Falls High School and Langham Creek High School provided music for the occasion.
During a heart-felt ceremony, each of the five associate superintendents read from the CFISD Portrait of an Administrator, a list of qualities and characteristics expected of those leading CFISD that were created during Berry’s tenure, and gave a personal reflection on his time in the district.
Berry graciously thanked everyone in attendance and shared his fondest memories of his years in CFISD. He spoke about how difficult the decision was for him to leave his “dream job and dream house” in Arlington ISD for Cypress-Fairbanks in 1992, but professed how truly happy he was to have made the move. He stated that he and his wife will still live in the Cy-Fair community and remain involved with district and other local organizations.
