Following approval of personnel transactions for March, the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District’s Board of Trustees recognized Larry Peil as the district’s new director of athletics.
Peil, who has served as associate athletic director for the last 24 years, will replace current CFISD athletic director George Hopper upon his retirement.
With all 36 years of his education experience earned working for CFISD, Peil earned his Bachelor’s degree in history from Sam Houston State University in 1968 and completed his Master of Education in Administration from Prairie View A&M in 1981. Additionally, he is certified in high school mathematics, history, driver education, mid-management administration and superintendent.
Peil began his career in CFISD teaching science and physical education at Arnold Junior High School in 1968. He transferred to Cy-Fair High School one year later to teach math and coach football, track and basketball. In 1976, Peil was promoted to assistant principal at Cy-Fair High and was subsequently named to his current position as associate athletic director four years later.

Over the years, Peil has been recognized as a national and state leader and has represented the Cypress-Fairbanks school district while serving on the State of Texas Faculty Board and by teaching leadership training courses for the National Interscholastic Athletic Administration Association. Additionally, he has served as treasurer of the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association for the last four years.
Leonard Brautigam, assistant superintendent for student services, whose responsibilities include supervising the director of athletics said, “Larry Peil has an outstanding reputation statewide and is respected by both coaches and other district staff members. He is committed to providing opportunities for student involvement in athletics.”
Peil and his wife Charlotte, a teacher at Cypress Springs High School, reside in the Cy-Fair community.
