A group of outstanding science students from Cypress Falls High School recently competed against teams from across the country at the 2004 National Science Olympiad Tournament held May 21 and 22 at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa.
Co-sponsored by the National Science Olympiad, the national competition brings together the top teams from more than 40 states. Each state fields teams of middle school- and high school-aged scientists to compete in 23 scientific events based on the principles of biology, physics, chemistry, earth sciences, problem-solving and technology. Competitors are separated by grade-level into two divisions: Division B (grades 6-9) and Division C (grades 9-12).
The team from Cypress Falls High School, coached by chemistry teacher Jennifer Wuellner, placed 37th among the 54 teams at the national competition in Division C. Team members include: seniors Tim Nguyen, Alan Nguyen, An Nguyen, and Pamela Vo; juniors Shawn O’Neill, Michael Gray, Hoang Nguyen, Nicolas Canac, Amin Nathani, Brian Berger and Khasimuddin Syed; sophomore Endri Hoxha; and freshmen Ye-jin Kang, Margaret Zahr, Irenie Kaffes, Amanda Chow, and Theresa Vo.
Students placing in the top 10 at the national contest include: seventh place for Michael Gray and Nic Canac in the Compute This category; eighth place for Nic Canac and Amin Nathani in the Tower Building category; and ninth place for Amanda Chow and Theresa Vo in the Awesome Aquifers category.
Cypress Falls students placing in the top 20 included: 16th place for Alan Nguyen and Hoang Nguyen in the Robot Ramble category; 18th place for Tim Nguyen and Brian Berger in the Polymer Detective category; 19th place for Michael Gray and Shawn O'Neill; and 20th place for Maggie Zahr and Irenie Kaffes in the Write It, Do It category.
