TRUSTEES RECOGNIZE STATE HISTORY DAY WINNERS

Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District trustees honored students who won first or second place and special award winners from State History Day competition at the June 10 work session. The competition was held May 7-8 in Austin.

The group of Allie Chapman, Jennifer Grieger, Katie Unverferth and Lauren Atencio from CyFair won first place in group performance at the State contest. The students advanced to the National History Day Competition June 13-17 at the University of Maryland for their performance “Grave Memories: Encountering the Black Death in Medieval Europe.”

Melissa Mahoney, Goodson Middle School, placed second with her individual exhibit “It’s a Geyser-The Boom that Shook the World.” She also advanced to the National History Day Competition.

Ravanne Harris, Thornton Middle School, received a special award from the Institute of Texas Cultures for her entry “Thinking Like a Woman: Mary Kay Ash.”

“These students have devoted immeasurable hours to their final products. They begin their research early in the fall and continue it throughout the year. In order to be competitive at the state level the quality of the product and research is equivalent to that of a college senior who is majoring in history,” said Mary Smith,
