CY-FAIR GRADUATES CAPTURE WORLD ATTENTION

Two left-handed Cypress-Fairbanks ISD graduates do it right as they capture world attention and make sports history on Monday, August 23.   Cypress Springs graduate Catherine “Cat” Osterman won her first Olympic gold medal with the USA Softball team and Cypress Falls graduate Scott Kazmir made a successful Major League Baseball debut with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Osterman, the 2003 USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year and the youngest player on the Olympic squad, pitched 14 and 2/3 scoreless innings in the Olympics, giving up only two hits while striking out 23 batters. Team USA defeated Australia 5-1 to capture the gold medal. The left-hander is a two-time All-American, the 2003 Big 12 Pitcher of Year and was the ace of the Lady Longhorns staff with a 32-6 record. She tossed 18 shutouts and led the nation with an ERA of 0.38 and an average of 14.1 strikeouts per seven innings.

Kazmir tossed five shutout innings, giving up only four hits and striking out four to lead the visiting Tampa Bay Devil Rays to a 9-0 win over the Seattle Mariners.

Kazmir, 20, is the youngest pitcher in the major leagues. The left-hander was drafted by the New York Mets with the 15 th pick in the 2002 draft. Kazmir was dominant in high school, throwing six no hitters and setting the state’s all-time record for strikeouts.

“ Scott showed the composure we became accustom to at Cypress Falls pitching out of some tough situations. It was an amazing performance for the youngest pitcher in the major leagues,” said Brent McDonald, head baseball coach at Cypress Falls .
