Marching bands from Cy-Fair, Cypress Falls and Langham Creek high schools advanced from area competition and qualified for the UIL State Marching Band contest November 2 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
The top 10 marching bands qualified for the finals. Langham Creek placed ninth in the preliminary round and advanced to march in the finals where the Lobos placed fourth in the state - just one point away from drawing a tie for second place.
Langham Creek, directed by Scott McAdow, performed “Textures” which explores various aural and visual textures and features the music of Aram Khachaturian’s Gayaneh Ballet.
“Cypress-Fairbanks ISD was the only school district to qualify three bands for the state marching. I’m very proud of all of them. This was a tremendous accomplishment and the band directors and students should feel very proud. They all worked very hard and of course, none of this would be possible without the support of the parents,” said Bill Quillen, director of secondary music.
Cy-Fair, directed by Mark Veenstra, performed “Heartbeat” featuring music by Key Poulan. The show is presented in three movements – Adrenaline Rush, which starts slowly and increases speed; Passionate Heart, which reflects romantic love; and Heart Attack, which depicts the stopping of the heart and ending triumphantly with the heart re-starting.
Cypress Falls, directed by Frank Troyka , performed “Same Difference” with music by Rob Smith, Key Poulan, and Shawn McAnear. This show is based on extreme contrasts: high vs. low, classical violin vs. electric guitar and bass, opera vs. rap, and more.
