CY-FAIR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT TO VISIT JAPAN

Cy-Fair High School junior Kristina Perez is one of only six students in the nation chosen to spend a week in Japan speaking to schools, government agencies and community-based organizations as part of the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) Sugihara Fellowship program.

Perez will visit Kyoto, Osaka and Yaotsu during the week of January 15-22, 2005.

She is one of four CFISD students who participated in the annual Youth Leadership Mission to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. October 17-20 sponsored by the ADL. Joining Perez in Washington, D.C. were Amartya Sengupta, Cy-Fair High School and Amanda Johns and Jose Gutierrez, Cypress Springs High School. The students were chosen because of their leadership potential, demonstrated interest in addressing issues of diversity, and ability to impart the messages of the mission to others.

“ Well I was definitely in shock when I first found out, and it wasn’t until my older brother ran down the hall to give me a hug that it really hit me, so I really feel blessed and in awe that I was picked. There were just so many amazing kids that were in D.C. and I didn’t expect this tremendous honor. There is also a really strong sense of responsibility- I really don’t want to waste this opportunity, and I hope to take in as much as I can,” she said.

Perez is an anchor and reporter for the CF-TV Time Warner Channel 16 District News show for the 2004-05 school year and was an anchor for the channel’s Big Ticket sports show during 2003-04. She is also vice president of Cy-Fair High School’s Civil Rights Club and a student representative for

Peer Assistance Leadership (PAL), a program in which high school students mentor elementary students.   She is a third-year photography and electronic media student and also is a youth Bible study leader at her church.

“ We are very proud to have Kristina not only represent Cy-Fair High School and Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, but represent the youth of America as she travels to Japan to share knowledge about life in the United States,” said Darlene Medford, principal at Cy-Fair High School. “Kristina is an exceptional individual who truly embraces diversity.   I know Kristina will have a positive impact on anyone she meets and will learn so much from this wonderful experience.”
