CYPRESS RIDGE STUDENT WINS SCHOLARSHIP IN YOUNG EPIDEMIOLOGY SCHOLARS (YES) COMPETITION

Cypress Ridge High School student Natalie Pawelek was recently notified that she will receive a $1,000 college scholarship for being named a semifinalist in the 2004-05 Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition, sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the College Board, for her project “Obesity in Elementary Age Children.”

Pawelek is the daughter of Lilly and David Garcia who both work in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD.  Lilly is a teacher at Sheridan Elementary and David is an assistant principal at Cy-Ridge.

The Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition for original student research is designed to inspire talented students to investigate the many behavioral, biological, environmental and social factors that affect health and, based upon this knowledge, to identify ways to improve the health of the public. The YES Competition offers college scholarship awards to high school juniors and seniors who conduct outstanding research projects that apply epidemiological methods of analysis to a health-related issue.
