CYPRESS FALLS STUDENTS ADVANCE TO NATIONAL SCIENCE OLYMPIAD COMPETITION

A team of scientifically motivated students from Cypress Falls High School outperformed 31 teams from across the state to capture first place at the Texas Science Olympiad competition at Texas A&M University April 15-16. Cypress Falls will represent Texas and compete against teams from across the country at the 2005 National Science Olympiad Tournament May 20-21 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Team members are seniors Shawn O’Neill, Michael Gray, Van Nguyen, Nicolas Canac, Tram Le, Brian Berger, Khasimuddin Syed, and Daniel Hoang (alternate); juniors Endri Hoxha, Alex Hinn, Hoang Nguyen, Theresa Vo and Carina Basket; sophomores Ye-jin Kang, Amanda Chow, Linzy Yu (alternate); and freshmen Andy Liao and Kathrine Mitchell (alternate).

The students are coached by Jennifer Wuellner, chemistry teacher at Cypress Falls High School with help from additional coaches Audra Spivey, Joseph Malaglowicz, Dr. Mark Gray, Susan Brockley, and David Belanger.

“To use a word from our ROPES Course experience as a team, this team is DYNAMIC!  We have 18 students who all perform at a superior level and each one is able to work with students from many different backgrounds in many different areas of science,” said Wuellner.

“It is rare to find such a group in today’s society.  I am extremely proud of all of their successes this year,” she said.

Co-sponsored by the National Science Olympiad, the event brings together the top teams from more than 40 separate state competitions. Each state fields teams of middle school- and high school-aged scientists to compete for two days in a variety of scientific events that are based on physics, chemistry, geology and a host of other science fields. Competitors are separated into two divisions: Division B (grades 6-9) and Division C (grades 9-12).

Science Olympiad competitions ask students to apply the principles of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, problem-solving and technology to events that ask competitors to do everything from constructing a bridge to reconstructing a crime scene.
