JERSEY VILLAGE TEACHER PLANNING STAR WARS REUNION

Robert Dennison, biology teacher at Jersey Village High School, has planned a special reunion for his former students in May when Stars Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith is released. Dennison has used Star Wars as a discussion topic and teaching tool in his biology class since 1978, the year after the first Star Wars movie - Episode IV: A New Hope was released.

Students have shown their appreciation by presenting him with Star Wars-related items as teacher appreciation gifts for 27 years. Dennison proudly displays the hundreds of items including action figures, posters, spaceships and more in his classroom.

He began the tradition of seeing the new movies as 30 former students joined him in 1999 when Episode I: The Phantom Menace was released and then again in 2002 when 60 students joined him for the release of Episode II: Attack of the Clones opened.

“So far, about 200 current and ex-students have replied that they are coming to the showing and the party planned afterwards at the school. Some of those students graduated as far back as 1980 and some are coming from as far away as Utah, California, Arkansas, etc.”

Dennison has arranged for a private showing of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith for his current and former students only on Saturday, May 21 at 3:30 p.m. at the AMC Willowbrook theater.

“The AMC manager was great. He agreed to set aside one auditorium just for our group. Of course, to make this happen I basically had to purchase all of the seats in the house. That just means that everyone needs to buy their tickets from me in order to be part of our private showing,” Dennison added.

Dennison has received numerous awards during his career at Jersey Village, including the H-E-B Excellence in Teaching Award (2003 Lifetime Achievement Award). He was also a finalist in the 2002 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching Program, and he was one of only 20 teachers in the nation to receive the Siemens Award for Advanced Placement in 2000. He has also been inducted into the Cypress-Fairbanks Wall of Fame on four separate occasions.
