LANGHAM CREEK HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HONORED IN NATIONAL ACADEMIC COMPETITIONS

 

Three Langham Creek High School seniors have been named as Finalists in the 2005 National Merit Scholarship Program while 28 others were named as Commended Students. Two students earned recognition in the National Achievement Program and one was honored in the National Hispanic Recognition Program.

Vanessa Cooper, Tanmay Gokhale and Tanveer Khan were named as Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.   Commended Students are Jonathan Arnold, Fatima Banker, Allison Braeuer, John Chatfield, Brooks Christensen, Katherine Czepiel, Eddy Fong, Daniel Gonsalves, Daniel Harrison, Tyler Juergens, Megan Koudelka, Samuel Kutscha, Lok-Hin Lam, Xu Liu, Chris Marco, Mary Matza, Allison McAdow, Kathleen McAndrews, Robert McInvale, Stephanie Mitchell, Jennifer Nollsch, Katherine Petroski, Kathleen Rossman, Paul Schlueter, Gillian Smith, Katherine Todd, Emily Walker and Charlotte Whitehead.

Dela Gbordzoe was named a Finalist in the National Merit Achievement Scholarship Program and Wesley Patterson was named a Commended Student.

Daniel Gonsalves was named as a Scholar in the The National Hispanic Recognition Program.

More than 1.3 million juniors in over 21,000 U.S. high schools entered the 2005 Merit Scholarship competition when they took the 2003 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. In September 2004, approximately 1,600 of the highest scorers were named Semifinalists.

Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation were recognized for their exceptional academic promise.  Although they did not continue in the 2005 competition for

Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 5 percent of more than one million students who entered the 2005 competition by taking the 2003 Preliminary SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The National Hispanic Recognition Program, established in 1983, is a College Board program that provides national recognition of the exceptional academic achievements of Hispanic high school seniors, and identifies them for post-secondary institutions.

Students enter the program by taking the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) as high school juniors and by identifying themselves as Hispanic. From more than 200,000 students nationwide, approximately 4,900 of the highest scoring students were initially identified as semifinalists. Based on further evidence of their academic achievement, a select group of 4,200 students have been recognized as a Scholar or Honorable Mention.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program is an academic competition established in 1964 to provide recognition for outstanding African-American high school students. Of the more than 120,000 students who currently enter the National Achievement Program each year, approximately 4,600 are honored. A group of about 3,000 are referred to colleges for their potential for academic success. A smaller group of about 1,600 are named Semifinalists, and then 1,300 are named as Finalists.
