Visitors to the National American History Museum will see history come alive when Goodson Middle School students Emily Neville, Chris Baker, Brooke Boncimino and Heidy Hallgrimsdottir present their exhibit Wednesday, June 15 at the Smithsonian Institute’s National American History Museum in Washington, D.C.
These young history scholars will present their work reflecting this year’s National History Day theme “Communication in History: The Key to Understanding” between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on the first floor of the Museum.
“We’ve learned so much and it has been really exciting to talk with some interesting and generous people who have all risked their lives doing what they felt was the most important thing in the world,” said Emily. “My group and I think it’s really exciting to show our project at the Smithsonian and visit Washington. It’s been a really wonderful experience and we have really gained an appreciation for the contribution of these brave people.”
The students are four of nine in the nation selected to present their projects at the museum and are part of a larger group of more than 2,000 finalists participating in the National History Day (NHD) national contest at the University of Maryland June 12-16. Emily, Brooke, Chris and Heidy’s project is titled “The Living Room War: Television and Communication in the Vietnam
War” and is about television news reporting of the Vietnam War, but contains information about war reporting and television from World War II to today’s Iraq War. The group members have worked over the last year researching, reading, and interviewing war correspondent and author of
The Cat from Hue, John Laurence, formerly of CBS News, Public Affairs’ publisher Peter Osnos, formerly of the Washington Post, Vietnam veteran and journalist Bill Balleza of KPRC’s Channel 2, Vietnam veteran and attorney Dave Boyle of Cicero, IL, and Iraq war veteran Rich Jimenez.
The NHD program annually engages more than half a million participants in grades six through 12 from 49 states, the District of Columbia, and American Samoa.
