Cypress Springs Basketball Coach Honored By Kent State University
Cypress Springs High School head girls basketball coach and Kent State University all-time leading scorer Bonnie Beachy was honored during a special halftime ceremony of Kent State’s women’s basketball game against Miami University February 23.
Beachy’s No. 13 jersey was retired near the end of her senior season more than two decades ago but a replica of the jersey was never raised in Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center. The recognition ceremony took place exactly 21 years from the day her uniform originally was retired February 23, 1982.
"Putting her retired jersey in the rafters of the M.A.C. Center has been long overdue," said KSU Director of Athletics Laing Kennedy. "The fact that, after 21 years, she is still our leading scorer shows just how great of a player she was."
Beachy was Kent State’s first women’s basketball All-American and still holds Kent State’s basketball scoring record for both men and women with 2,071 career points (17.1 ppg). In addition, her 732 points and 21.5 point scoring average as a junior in the 1980-81 season also remain school records, even though she played five years before the introduction of the three-point shot. She ended her athletic career with 23 Kent State game, season and career records and she still owns nine of those marks.
Beachy led the Flashes to an 85-40 record during her career, including three consecutive seasons of 21 or more wins. As a senior, she helped Kent State capture the Mid-Atlantic Conference (MAC) title and the Flashes first trip ever to the NCAA Tournament where they lost to the University of Southern California, a perennial powerhouse in women’s basketball.
The 1982 Kent State graduate began her career in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD as an assistant coach at Cypress Falls High School in 1992. She became head coach at Cypress Springs High School when it opened in 1997.
