March 31, 2006TWO AFJROTC CADETS NATIONALLY SELECTED FOR HONORS CAMP
Junior Cadet Nabih K. Hussein and freshman Cadet Sarah T. Richmond from Cypress Ridge High School were nationally selected for the 2006 AFJROTC Aerospace and Technology Honors Camp. Hussein and Richmond will attend the one-week Honors Camp this June at Arizona State University where they will be oriented to aerospace technology educational opportunities and aerospace related careers through a “hands-on” curriculum including visits to college campuses, air and space operational units, research labs, historical sites, aerospace industries, research and technology centers, museums, and each cadet will be provided with an incentive flight. Additionally, cadets will hear lectures from general officers, astronauts, and pilots, and participate in simulator and airplane rides. Cadet Hussein , a member of the varsity wrestling team, National Honor Society and Kitty Hawk Air Society, has a 3.7 GPA in a demanding College Prep program which includes pre-calculus and physics. “Leadership by example is his (Nabih’s) style in every Corps endeavor,” said Lt. Col. Steve Rakel, senior aerospace science instructor at CRHS. “After graduating from high school, Cadet Hussein wants to pursue an Air Force career, serving our Nation as a pilot and environmental engineer. To help meet his goals, Cadet Hussein plans to compete for both an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy and an Air Force ROTC scholarship.” Cadet Richmond played a key role in planning and participating in a car wash to raise $1,000 for Hurricane Katrina victims, directly resulting in the Cypress Ridge unit garnering the Unit Humanitarian Award. “It is rare to find a freshman high school student with such a mature focus on her goals for the future. I have no doubt she will be successful in her endeavor to be a fighter pilot—even a Thunderbird pilot. Her most outstanding quality is leadership,” Rakel said. Hussein and Richmond are two of the 470 cadets selected from 1,600 applicants and represent the top one half of one percent of the approximately 110,000 AFJROTC cadets worldwide. Those selected have a minimum GPA of 3.0, are rising sophomores, juniors or seniors, enrolled in college-prep math and science courses, and demonstrated leadership potential. The objective of the Aerospace & Technology Honors Camp is to introduce high-achieving high school cadets to scientific, technical, and rated career opportunities in the Air Force.
