FEDERAL HURRICANE IMPACT AID TO BE DISTRIBUTED TO CFISD
Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District applauds the decision of Governor Rick Perry, Texas Education Agency (TEA) Commissioner Shirley Neeley, legislative officials, and their staffs to distribute federal funds, in full, to Texas school districts that enrolled students who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Commissioner Neeley explained that schools have acted in good faith by taking in about 46,000 evacuees [statewide]. In a TEA press release today, the Commissioner goes on to state that districts should not be penalized financially for this act of kindness. “We appreciate every dollar the federal government is sending to us to help cover the cost of educating hurricane evacuees, but it is clear that the federal funds appropriated so far will fall short of covering all costs incurred by local districts and the state,” Neeley said. Last month, the Texas Education Agency announced that it would retain a portion of the federal funding appropriated as impact aid. “Prior to making the final decision, Dr. Neeley and her staff at the Agency demonstrated strong leadership when arranging for a meeting with superintendents of schools representing the Houston area and Dallas metroplex regarding issues and concerns related to the impact of enrolling students from Louisiana,” said Dr. David Anthony, CFISD superintendent. |
