JERSEY VILLAGE AIR FORCE JUNIOR ROTC TO HOST RETREAT CEREMONY

The Air Force Junior ROTC unit at Jersey Village High School will honor all Houston-area police officers and firefighters during its annual Retreat Ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, March 29 at 3 p.m. by the flagpole in the front of the school, 7600 Solomon Street.

The Retreat Ceremony serves two purposes: it signals the end of the official duty day and also serves as a ceremony for paying respect to the flag.

Honored guests scheduled to attend the event include Charles Wedemeyer Jr., chief of the Jersey Village Police Department; Kathleen Hutchens, chief of the Jersey Village Fire Department; Joe Davis, chief of the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department; Harold Hurtt, chief of the Houston Police Department; Phil Boriskie, chief of the Houston Fire Department;   and Cathy Hill, president of the Greater Houston chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc. (COPS).

Jersey Village cadets wanted to honor all police officers and firefighters who are either active, retired and also those who have fallen for their dedication to their profession, so they approached TSgt. Joseph Campbell in 2004 and asked if the annual spring Retreat Ceremony could be used in that manner.

“We were all very touched that the students wanted to honor those who give so very much of themselves,” Campbell said. “The event has been a tremendous success and has grown in number every year. We are expecting approximately 70 officers and firefighters at this year’s event.”

During the ceremony, the honored guests will be escorted through the “line of honor” comprised of the saber team and then the armed drill team will honor them. The American Flag will be lowered in honor of those who have given their lives for public service while a bagpiper from the Houston Police Department plays “Amazing Grace.” The ceremony will be concluded with the playing of “Taps.”

The event is open to the public and refreshments will be served in the Junior ROTC room following the ceremony. Contact Campbell at 713-849-8226 for more information.
