Cy-Fair High School Advances to State UIL One-Act Play Competition in Austin

Cy-Fair High School is scheduled to present “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead” at the State UIL One-Act Play ( OAP) competition on May 6 at The University of Texas in the Bass Concert Hall located at 23 rd Street and Robert Dedman Drive. This will be the first time a CFISD high school will present a One-Act Play at state level.

“I’m so proud of the quality of theater in our district—and I’m thrilled to have Cy-Fair represent us at the State UIL One-Act Play contest,” said Glenda Horner, district coordinator for Theater Arts, Speech, Debate, and Media Literacy Curriculum.

Cy-Fair was one of the two District 17-5A high schools selected to advance from the Regional OAP competition held at Alief Taylor High School this past Saturday.

Cy-Fair , selected to represent Region III, will now compete against seven other high schools selected from each of the state’s four regions.

The drama team, under the direction of Cy-Fair drama teachers Candice Koern, Rachel Seney, and Stephen Cabaniss, is scheduled to give their performance after two other schools perform in the 5A Session I beginning at 4 p.m.

Students participating in the One-Act Play competition are cast members: seniors Andrew Barcus, Leslie Chastain, Joe Wozny, Bryant Bourgeois, Janelle Storck, and Adam Doxey; juniors Carley Bowman, Ashley Taylor, Eric Oneacre, Alex Segovia, Hilary Bollom, and Travis Baker; and freshmen Will Sanders, Phil Wozny, and Bryan Gray; crew members are senior Edward Herman; junior Korrie Browning; and sophomores Marla Massey and Korrie Browning; and alternates include senior Joy Brunon; juniors Rachel Griffin and Kayla Stokes; and freshmen Esteban Castano and George McHugh.

“Going to state with this outstanding and unbelievably talented group of students will be one of the most memorable times in my directing career—but I must add that it is the journey, the road we have traveled, the great memories and the laughter that will always be in my heart,” said lead drama teacher Candice Koern.

Prior to advancing to state UIL competition, Cy-Fair along with Cypress Creek High School represented the UIL OAP District 17-5A at the Area OAP competition that was held at Tomball High School on April 8. Six schools, from three UIL districts, presented One-Act Plays for the area competition. Cy-Fair’s “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern” and Cypress Creek’s “The Last of Ballyhoo” (directed by Creek’s drama teachers Marilyn Miller, Wendy Carrell, and Chris Pruett) were the two shows selected to advance to the regionals that were held April 22. However, Cy-Fair was the only school from CFISD to advance to the state competition.
