CFISD NAMES TWO NEW PRINCIPALS FOR METCALF AND THORNTON

Following the approval of employee transactions during its regularly scheduled meeting for the month of April, the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District Board of Trustees recognized Mark McCord as the new principal of Thornton Middle School and John Steward as the new principal for Metcalf Elementary.

The two administrators filled the vacancies that were created by principals Barbara Crook, who is transferring to Bleyl Middle School, and Erwann Wilson, who accepted a position with another school district at the end of the school year.

McCord has 19 years of experience in education. He began his teaching career in Beaumont ISD as a science teacher at the Alternative Learning Center. In 1989, he joined the CFISD team as a science teacher at Cook Middle School where he served for 11 years. During this time, he served as an Interdisciplinary Team Leader, Content Team Leader, and Science Department Chair.   As a result of his outstanding leadership qualities, McCord was promoted to the position of assistant principal at Cook. He was then invited to move to Aragon Middle School to assist in the opening of the new campus. He has served as assistant principal at Aragon for the past five years.   In addition, he has served as summer school principal for two years.

McCord received his Bachelor of Science in education degree from Lamar University and his Master of Science in curriculum and instruction from University of Houston. In addition, he completed the requirements for the Principal Certification from Prairie View University. During his 19-year career, McCord has received extensive training in various programs including instructional strategies, classroom management and BBR (Building Better Relations).

Steward has 27 years of experience in education. He began his teaching career in the Houston Independent School District as a fifth-grade teacher. During the 18 years in HISD, he also assumed the roles of instructional coordinator and assistant principal. In 1997, he moved to Indianapolis to be with his parents. He served as an assistant principal at an elementary school in Indianapolis Public Schools before being promoted to principal in 1998 where he is currently.

Steward received his Bachelor of Science in public administration from Indiana University.   His master of science in elementary education was earned at Texas Southern University and he holds certification in elementary and mid-management administration.

During his 27-year career, Steward has received numerous awards as an outstanding educator.   In addition, during his years as principal, he organized and facilitated a cohesive staff that developed an effective instructional program which received the district’s highest accountability rating.
