CYPRESS FALLS BAND DEPARTMENT AWARDED SUDLER FLAG OF HONOR
The Cypress Falls Band department has been awarded the distinguished Sudler Flag of Honor, an International Award, sponsored by Louis and Virginia Sudler and administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation, recognizing high school concert bands of Outstanding Musical Excellence. The award will be presented by a Sousa Foundation representative on Sunday, May 21 at 4 p.m. in the school auditorium as the Cypress Falls Symphonic Band will present a concert followed by a formal reception. “This is a great opportunity to be a part of this special event and applaud these remarkable students and directors, Frank Troyka, John Morrison, and Shawn McAnear, for their limitless dedication to such an outstanding program,” said Linda Humphrey, band booster vice president for Cypress Falls. The band department was nominated in October 2005, and submitted materials to support their nomination to the selection committee. Materials included concert programs, recordings, a repertoire list, documentation of solo and ensemble awards, letters of recommendation from nationally and internationally recognized conductors, five years of adjudication sheets from concert and marching events, and rosters of All-Region, All-Area, and All-State members. Following the review of materials, a selection committee established by the Sousa Foundation unanimously recommended the Cypress Falls Band as one of only two high school bands worldwide for this honor in 2006. Since the inception of the Sudler Flag of Honor in 1983, fewer than 60 bands in the world have earned this prestigious award. The John Philip Sousa Foundation is a national organization whose purpose is to encourage and support the most accomplished level of musicianship among bands worldwide. Every year, select bands are nominated by members within the organization for consideration to receive the Sudler Flag of Honor, an award presented annually to one or more high school bands from across North America, Asia, and Europe whose excellence has been demonstrated over a period of years.
Concert II Band is one of the Cypress Falls bands recognized by the John Philip Sousa Foundation.
