May 26, 2006GOODSON STUDENTS TO COMPETE AT NATIONAL HISTORY DAY
Once again, Goodson Middle School will send students to compete at the National History Day (NHD), a national contest for students in grades 6-12, in College Park, Maryland, June 11-15. Madison Scherrer, Jaynie Pallasch and Sara Heskin competed first at the school’s History Day, sponsored by Terry Noe, social studies department chair. Then they progressed to the district and state levels, conducting extensive research related to the NHD annual theme and presenting their findings in one of four categories: exhibits, documentaries, performances or papers. In the two divisions, junior (grades 6-8) and senior (grades 9-12), students can choose to participate in the contest individually, or as part of a group of up to five students. In the junior state division, Madison and Jaynie placed first for their Group Documentary entry entitled “Love Canal.” Sara placed second in the Individual Exhibits category with her entry, “Clara Barton Sees Red, A Vision with a Mission.” Sara also was awarded the American History Innovation Award for the same entry. At the national contest, participants have the opportunity to win national awards of up to $5,000 and university scholarships. According to the NHD website, National History Day, Inc. is an education organization that transforms the way history is taught and learned. National History Day helps teachers meet educational standards; disseminates high quality curriculum materials; and sponsors challenging contests that teach students critical skills for the 21st century.
