CFISD SELECTED AS FINALIST IN 5 TH ANNUAL H-E-B EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION AWARDS

Dr. David Anthony, superintendent of schools, was recently notified that Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District has been selected as one of five finalists for the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards, designed to honor outstanding public schools.

“It is a privilege to be recognized by an outstanding community leader, such as H-E-B, who values the contribution of public schools that serve communities across Texas. Business partnerships provide essential support to school districts and make a positive difference in the quality of education for our children,” Dr. Anthony said.

The district was selected as a finalist based on the following criteria:

  • commitment to student achievement through innovative programs;
  • parental involvement;
  • community involvement; and
  • professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators.

School districts submitted written applications in March. Applications were then screened and scored by a team of professional readers. Regional finalists were selected by a panel of judges comprised of educators, administrators and community leaders. The five finalists were selected from the five identified regions within the H-E-B service area—one school district from each region. Applications have been reviewed by a statewide selection committee and the committee has conducted on-site district visits that include personal interviews with members of the school board, teachers, parents, principals, community leaders, superintendents and student leaders, as well as visits to campuses.

As a finalist, CFISD was presented with a check for $5,000 during a recent site visit from H-E-B officials. CFISD is now a contender for the $100,000 cash award. The winning school district will be announced on June 15 during an awards celebration in San Antonio.

  H-E-B launched the Excellence in Education awards program in 2002 as a positive way to support public education in Texas. A major goal of the Excellence in Education awards is to make a statement about the great things going on in Texas public schools—to spotlight best practices and to celebrate the work of Texas educators. Since its inception, more than $2 million has been awarded to educators, schools, and districts across the state—the largest monetary awards program for educators in Texas and one of the largest in the nation.

“Over 90 percent of Texas children attend public schools,” said Kate Rogers, H-E-B’s director of advertising. “H-E-B is pleased to help recognize the tremendous work that goes on every single day in our classrooms as our teachers and administrators work together to provide a quality education to all Texas children.”

The Excellence in Education Awards are presented by H-E-B in cooperation with the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA), the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association (TEPSA) and the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP).
