CFISD STUDENT NAMED NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR

Cypress Falls senior Marcelino Benito was recently named the 2006 National High School Journalist of the Year at the Journalism Education Association (JEA) and National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) Spring National Scholastic Journalism Convention in San Francisco.

Marcelino , who competed against the top student journalists from each state, was selected by a committee of judges based on a portfolio he submitted that consisted of four years of his work in journalism. As the 2006 National High School Journalist of the Year, Marcelino will receive a $5,000 scholarship and an all-expense paid trip to next year’s nationals in Denver to address the awards assembly prior to the announcing of next year's winner.

“If there’s anyone who deserves such a prestigious award—it’s Marcelino,” said Lisa Van Etta, publications adviser for Cypress Falls High School. “As a young freshman sitting in my Journalism I class, I immediately recognized his writing talents and dedication to journalism. That dedication earned him the assistant editor position the first six weeks of school. He has been on the fast track ever since. Serving as editor for the last three years, the paper has reached new heights—winning the JEA/NSPA Best of Show in 2003 his sophomore year followed by earning second in Best of Show at the ’05 convention in Chicago.”

Marcelino’s journalism résumé, Van Etta added, reads like the Who’s Who in High School Journalism.

“He has consistently placed in every competition both nationally and statewide since his freshman year. With an accumulation of over 100 journalism/photojournalism awards and still counting as results begin to come from competitions this year, he has yet to reach the pinnacle of his high school career,” she said.

Marcelino recently won 19 awards from the Texas Association of Journalism Education (TAJE) Clip Contest.

He currently has a job at European Wire Service EFE as a photographer having sold both stories and photos to ESPN.

Marcelino applied to University of Texas, Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois and American University in Washington, D.C. He was accepted to all three colleges. With an offer of $33,000 a year from Northwestern, and $27,000 a year from American, Marcelino has decided to attend Northwestern University.
