STUDENTS WIN NATIONAL GOLD SCHOLASTIC WRITING AWARD
National Gold Scholastic Writing Award winners Mariya Karimjee and Katherine Nguyen were recognized by the Board at its regularly scheduled May 4 meeting. The entries of Karimjee, a senior at Cy-Fair High School, and Nguyen, an eighth-grade student at Hamilton Middle School, were selected from 418 regional entries to advance to the national level of Scholastic Writing competition in New York. In New York, entries from across the country were judged on the basis of originality, technical skill, and evidence of an emerging personal style. National Gold Award recipients, chosen from among thousands of entries, were judged by panels comprised of highly qualified individuals—in the past writing judges have included Robert Frost and Frank McCourt. Karimjee and Nguyen were among the 18 National Gold Scholastic Writing Award winners from Harris County that were honored at Barnes & Noble Books (Westheimer at Voss) on May 6 where Bill Balleza, KPRC-TV news anchor, was the guest speaker. They will also be honored, with all other National Award winners, at a high-profile event held at Carnegie Hall in New York City, June 8-10.The Scholastic Writing Awards program is the nation’s largest and longest running competition of its kind, and it provides an important forum for young writers whose exceptional talents deserve encouragement, recognition and reward.
