STUDENTS PLACE FIRST AT GLOBAL FINALS IN KNOXVILLE

Thousands of spectators cheered and applauded as seven Hamilton Middle School students ran to the stage to accept their first place trophy at the annual Destination ImagiNation (DI) Global Finals in Knoxville, Tenn., held May 24-27.

The sixth-grade CFISD team, Kid Inventors at Work (KIAW), competed against 63 teams in their division and won first place at the Finals for the first time in Hamilton history.

Team members included Drew Allen, Eddie Brucculeri, Nathalie Charlton, Sally Cogan, Hayden Passon, Daniel Schlomer and Michael Sliva.   The school sponsor was Mary Young-Miller and the team managers were Denise Cogan and Cathy Sliva.

KIAW competed in the Back at You! challenge in which the team had to demonstrate technical design and construction, innovation and design process, mathematics, experimentation, theater arts and teamwork.   The team also was required to participate in the Instant Challenge portion of the competition. With no prior knowledge of the task, the team of four boys and three girls was asked to solve a problem using their “thinking-on-their-feet” skills to produce a solution in a period of five to eight minutes. KIAW produced a first place winning solution.

Competing and winning are not new experiences for the dedicated sixth-grade team.   During the past four years of working together, this clever and energetic team has won numerous awards including the coveted DaVinci award for outstanding spirit of risk and creativity as well as the Renaissance award for extraordinary preparation, engineering and design.

DI is the international program designed to foster creativity and problem-solving in elementary to university-level students.   DI teams choose from five challenges and then spend six months or more finding their own solutions. Participants learn unique and critical life skills including teamwork, critical and creative thinking, project management, resource management, mutual respect, research and presentation skills. All challenges must be strictly team-solved.

Global Finals is a culmination of the creativity competition year.   It brings team winners representing their state, their province, or their country to compete together at the largest creativity competition of its kind held anywhere.
